Super Bueno came to play. Not just play, but PLAY. We came in prepared, we knew what to do, and we followed the game plan and executed. Defense was the key all day long, and we used the playing conditions to our advantage. As Ra's al Ghul told Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins, "Always mind your surroundings." We also saw the return of our Captain Niks Gaspar, who provided a huge lift in our women's line.
We knew Team Pusakals was going to be short-stacked, but nevertheless did not take them for granted and we got the job done 11-5. We were up 6-1 when Pusakals made a run at us and closed in on 6-4. But we kept our composure and focused on just one point at a time. We turned up the defense again and secured a much needed victory over our sparring partner and sister team. In the second game against USC, everything just started clicking. We gained a lot of confidence beating Pusakals, and we kept up our pressure defense the entire second game. We really focused hard on forcing turnovers, and when it was our turn to strike, we did not hesitate. We finished the game 12-0, our first ever victory via shutout. Special mention goes to Keo Ramos for delivering a thrilling Callahan. Props goes to new recruits Kevs, Gian and Lil' B for each scoring their first goals in league play. The team is finally starting to mature, and our younger players are beginning to step up big time. Our girls are also showing their toughness and they provide a huge boost for us. Our overall record is now 3-1, and we're in good shape to make the Pool B playoffs. We're doing quite well, but we still have lots of room for improvement. This week, we'll keep up the training intensity, and we won't take any opponent for granted. Oretachiwa Bueno! -Benny The pilot episode of SB Radio is now available here! Listen in on the wacky exploits of Mike and Benny, offering their insights about Ultimate Frisbee in the Philippines, as well as some good ol' fashioned teammate bashing.
The first day of the league showed things we need working on. During our first game against BC they used cup defense against us and it worked really well especially with the wind not cooperating. The wind though is not an excuse. We also had a hard time swinging the disc and because of this the cutters also had a hard time cutting in, not knowing if they have to cut or not. Our offense wasn’t that great either, there are drops and a number of bad decisions.
Our game against Space Grapes proved that the cup is really effective especially when executed well; we were able to shut down their handlers and stopped in‐cuts from happening. Although we deserved that win, we could’ve done better, we still made a lot of errors especially bad decisions. It is important to listen to the sideline when you’re in a must score situation, you don’t even have to look, just listen. All in all it was a good first day, I’m sure we could do better, if there’s one lesson we all learned from Day 1 it was to be always prepared. Lets all train harder and concentrate even more. Lets go BUENO! ‐Anton And so it begins, a new season filled with bright possibilities. We trained hard during the off-season, so let's see how far we can go this year. :)
"First things first. The disc won't fly if it doesn't spin. The only way you can impart spin is if you use your wrist."
This has been my programmed spiel for the past 2 years, teaching beginners, intermediate players and even advanced players, the game of Ultimate Frisbee. It's been 2 years since I held my very first training session. It's been 2 years since I embarked on this topsy-turvy journey. After 8 leagues, 100+ players taught, endless spillage of blood sweat and tears, and countless memories along the way, Super Bueno is now 2 years old! I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have met such diverse group of people. 'Family' is always the word we throw around and rightly so. It's not everyday you get a chance to be part of something like this. You'll have your basketball teams in school, or organizations and clubs in college, but this team transcends all those groups. There's nothing quite like the Bueno family. It just gives me warm and fuzzy feelings inside just imagining 20-30 years from now, when we're all retired from the game, but we'd look back with fond memories about our glory days. Our kids would probably be playmates, and we'd all still keep in touch one way or another. That's the type of legacy that we're looking at right now. And I can imagine by then, there's still a team called Super Bueno winning championships all over the world. Hey if we're gonna dream, might as well dream big! There's this quote by Chuck Palahniuk, "We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will." That's always been the goal for Super Bueno. Players come and go, but the team and the system we built should outlast all of us. The name in the front of the jersey is always more important than the name at the back. As long as the goal is clear, Super Bueno will keep marchin' on. -Benny |
